About Us

AliceIt is hard to believe that 40 years ago I started Alice’s Cottage on my kitchen table. What began as one thought, blossomed and grew into a business that now sells around the world. I guess though, you could really say it all started back when I was very small. As a child I was constantly making things with my hands. I made my doll clothes using scrap fabric and a needle and thread. And when I was old enough to reach the peddle, my mother taught me how to use a sewing machine.

After marrying, my husband and I moved to the Blue Ridge Mountains of western Maryland. Nurtured by my lifelong love of nature, fabrics and art, the business took form and eventually moved from our kitchen table to a 19th century summer kitchen located on our property. There I designed and sewed all the new items. As my ideas grew so did the product line that is now sewn with pride by talented seamstresses living in the surrounding area.

I am constantly creating new artwork and keeping the line fresh with the changing seasons, gathering inspiration from nature, the birds and gardens surrounding my home. It starts with an original watercolor and is ultimately silk screened onto our many products. The entire manufacturing process from creating the art, to drafting the patterns, to cutting the fabric, to screening the designs and finally sewing the completed products and shipping to our customers, is done here in western Maryland.

Although we no longer work out of our summer kitchen, and have moved to much larger quarters, we have not lost that personal touch. We will continue to strive to give you the service and standard of excellence you so deserve. It is our commitment to bring you the very best in quality and affordability. None of this would be possible if not for the dedication and support of my husband and staff. I feel so fortunate to have this talented and hard working team around me.

With gratitude and thanks,
Alice Goebel Backman
